Thursday, January 23, 2013 Close Reading Analysis: “Finding Myself through Language”
In the article Finding Myself through Language, Andrea Lo talks about how it was hard for to accept her culture and language. In the beginning of the article Lo despises being Chinese. Lo was embarrassed of anything having to deal with Chinese. Throughout the article Lo finds her true identity by breaching into the Cantonese language. Lo finally realizes instead of trying to escape it, she embraced it. In this article Andrea Lo uses ethos and metaphors to negotiate an identity through language because it helps the reader understand her actions through her diction.
In the beginning of this article Andrea Lo uses a rhetorical device such as ethos. She uses the word “was” strongly. Lo said “I was born of Chinese blood, but I was born and raised in the USA. I was Chinese-American, and I was adamant in making that distinction.” Para.1. She uses past tense verbs to make sure the reader knows that is something that nothing to do with her decision. She did not choose to be Chinese and American is her ideal identity. Lo is making herself believe she is American and Chinese is just her blood, and not her actual identity. Andrea Lo was so sure of this, until later in the article she had second thoughts about who she really is.
A second device Lo uses is metaphors. Lo said “…cultural influences have shaped my own behavior and identity.” Para.13 Lo is trying to say everyone in that environment or in the culture had quite an impact on the influence of her identity. Lo has grown up around Americans most of her life, so of course she believed she was just American. When a person is surrounded by a particular culture they either adapt to it or aren’t affected by it in anyway. Whatever culture she is around more, will influence her overall regardless of her race or identity.
In this article Lo uses the devices ethos and metaphors to convey a better understanding for the reader in why she compromises her identity through language. The ethos was to strongly establish what she believed she was which was American. Then Lo started having second thoughts and started to think otherwise. This is when she used metaphors expressing her reconsideration. Lo now realizes that there can be a compromise and she should embrace what is essentially a part of her and not try to “erase” her culture.

reflection:
Some of the sentences in this essay are basic and a bit jumbled up. I did not cite correctly. I have a problem with verb tense. Other than that , my essay is not all that bad. Everything I identified , I would change so it would be better.
