Passage #1:
“Ah God! It was true! All the prophecies! Now, O Light, may I look upon you for the last time! I, Oedipus, Oedipus be damned in his birth, in his marriage damned, damned in the blood he shed with his own hand!”
(Sophocles, Oedipus Rex, Scene IV, Lines 1118-1124)
Analysis of Passage #1:
In this passage Sophocles illustrates Oedipus realization. This passage is about Oedipus finally realizing he is the man all along. The prophecies were his true fate. This is why Oedipus calls on light. Light is symbolization for knowledge. His mind is not clouded with ignorance and hubris anymore. Oedipus has become humble and regretful. He feels hopeless and sorry for himself. Sophocles uses the term “damned” quite a few times in this passage. The repetition puts emphasis on how ashamed and deceived he feels. When Oedipus rants about being “damned in his birth” or says he is damned in his marriage and “damned in the blood he shed with his own hand,” he is basically saying he is cursed. Oedipus has been cursed since he was born. His whole world has turned upside down because of this vile fate. He feels deceived because he is married to his mother who sent him off to his death as a child. Oedipus is cursed with the blood of his father. Miraculously Oedipus was granted a chance at life which is why he feels like a burden to the city. As planned his everlasting fate came back to haunt him and take a toll on the city.

REFLECTION:
This analysis is one of the crappy ones I have done this year. I received a 72 on it compared to the others ones where I received a grade in the 80s. I was not very specific with the things I was identifying. I also had a lot of simple sentences. I would change that by combining some of the similar sentences. I would get rid of the passive voice and change my verb tense. Overall, I got my point across.
