What makes up a human being? Do people know who they are? What makes a person, looks or personality? A character is composed by our environment and society. Basically, people live off of each other. Humans mimic and imitate one another whenever they see something they like. Character traits are formed over a long period of time through life experiences. Human beings are not really how they start off. People are not truly who they once were.
In the Joy Luck Club, Lena St. Clair was corrupted as a child. Her mother exposed her to tragedies about the real world and the cruelties of people. One story affected her for the rest of her life. Life was not at all sugar coated for her as a child. Now Lena must know every worst possible outcome in every situation. “I always thought it mattered; to know what is the worst possible that can happen to you, to know how you can avoid it, to not be drawn by the magic of the unspeakable.” (Tan 103) These influences have shaped Lena’s character. Her mentality is made by her mother’s influences as a child and stayed with her as she got older.
I am all for the psychoanalysis theory in psychology. How are you supposed to pick your own character traits if you haven’t had any experiences with life or people? I have become this person who I used to despise. All of the people who left me to rot in this cold word have made me who I am today. My past relationships, the fake friends, and the insecurities tore me apart to the point I am a new person. I compare myself to an onion. If you pull back all the layers and get to the core, you will see I am still a scared and confused girl. Everything I have been through has influenced me to become brutally honest and reserved. I shut everyone out to prevent me getting hurt. These influences have shaped me and my mentality.
For one, we live in a stereotypical society, a society in which diversity is not accepted. The biggest influence on society is entertainment and media. These advertisements are made to target young people. Most young people are influenced by what they think is hip. A young person’s mind is usually naïve. Every person just wants to fit whether they want to believe it or not. Without these influences a person’s character traits would not be the same as it was with the influences.
A character is formed by influences beyond control. People thrive off of their surroundings and environment. Some people need a role model because they see it as guidance. Without role models people have no idea what to do with their life. People will lever really know who they are because people change as time goes on. Without people, the environment, and experiences how will a person get a feel of who they are and their traits ?
